Diarrhea Prevention Practice and Associated Factors Among Caregivers of Under Five Children in Jinka Town, Ethiopia, 2024

Introduction: Diarrhea is the passage of three or more loose stools per day. It is one of the world's major causes of child mortality and morbidity, even though it has preventive solutions. Earlier studies have addressed diarrhea management at home, instead of focusing on preventing it. Hence, this study aimed to assess the diarrhea prevention practice and associated factors among caregivers of under five children in Jinka town, Ethiopia, in 2024.
Methods: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted from November 1 to 30, 2024 in Jinka town, on 421 randomly selected study participants. Face-to-face interviews were conducted using pre-tested structured questionnaires to collect data. After entering the data into the Kobo tool, SPSS version 26 was used for analysis. Both multivariable and bivariate logistic regression analysis was used. Bivariate variables with a p-value of less than 0.25 were added to the multivariable logistic regression at a 95% confidence interval, and a p-value of less than 0.05 was considered to indicate a significant association.
Results: Our findings revealed that 56.7% of study participants had good diarrhea-prevention practices. Factors significantly associated with diarrhea prevention practice were time of complementary feeding initiation, hand washing facilities near the toilet, type of floor, and ways to dispose of refuse.
Conclusion: More than half of the study participants had good practices in diarrhea prevention in this study.
